Select one population group from those listed below
Select one mental health issue from those listed below
Young people (e.g.16-24 years)
Psychosis
Adults (e.g. 25-65 years)
Anxiety
Older adults (e.g. 65+ years)
Mood Disturbance
Note: You can choose to focus on the mental health issue broadly e.g. young people and psychosis, or you might focus on a specific mental health condition e.g. older adults and depression
Drawing on the evidence-based literature (e.g. primary quantitative and qualitative research studies or literature reviews), and focusing on both the population group and the mental health issue, you will write an essay that addresses the following points:
PART A
A brief introduction to the essay that identifies the selected population group and mental health issues.
Identify the prevalence of the mental health issue in Australia.
Using a biopsychosocial framework, explain the potential biological, psychological and social risk factors which may contribute to the development of the disorder in your chosen population
Describe the range of changes in behaviour, cognition, mood, physical functioning and/or communication that may be experienced by the individual with this mental health issue. This should not focus solely on describing symptoms; you need to consider potential changes experienced by the person across the life domains.
PART B
Briefly explain the concept of recovery in mental health practice, differentiating between clinical and personal recovery.
Select and briefly explain one therapeutic approach (non-pharmacological) that is available to assist people in your chosen population group to manage the mental health issue and support their recovery (Some examples include, psychoeducation, motivational interviewing, cognitive behaviour therapy, mindfulness-based therapy).
Critically discuss the effectiveness (not efficacy) of the approach for your chosen population group including any potential issues and limitations.

A succinct conclusion to the essay
