Three historical lenses can get applied to my topic. They include the political, social, and economic lens. I am of the opinion that the decision to promote apartheid policy was political through the passing of the group areas Act in the year 1950. The social lens is as a result of the racism that surfaced in South Africa. Lastly, the economic lens gets applied as a result of the labor market policies implemented that affected the labor system. The economic lens affects how I approach my topic. It is so because the economic lens tends to affect both the whites and non-whites citizens in South Africa. My main focus, however, is intended to be on how apartheid policy was established, which focuses more on political and social lenses. Historians can sometimes mislead many people since they can, at times, be biased while writing and describing a historical context. They can go further to basing the context of their current life rather than when it happened. It is thus advisable for historians to be keener and capture the exact context of the historical events in their writings. Researching a historical topic allows me to better understand why some things are happening the way they are in my current life. For instance, studying history helps one understand how racial discrimination and inequality issues began. However, considering these issues and seeing their effects may enable us to run away from them. From my point of view, it is correct to state that “history repeats itself.” I believe that history is cyclical, and how it flows and repeats itself is dependent on the generation. The only thing that changes is the participant’s names and the manner they flow with history. The study of racial discrimination drives me to conclude that even in our current world, some countries like South Africa still practice racism. I feel ignorance of history leads some people to adopt such kind of practices. It is my obligation as a citizen to equip myself with the history so that I can understand it more and improvise ways of helping the society fight the once with adverse effects like racism and gender inequality.
