Comparing the original book Frankenstein by mary shelly to the 1931 James Whale movie
The goal of this essay will be to compare a small section of the original work with the same scene from the film version. We will do this using the close reading and close viewing techniques we have discussed in class. This is not a long essay, so the section of text and the section of film you decide to analyze needs to be quite short.
First, you will do a close reading of a section of the text, chosen by you. You will use an analysis of the story and literary techniques to determine the purpose of the passage.
Second, you will do a close viewing of the section of the film that adapts your passage. You will use an analysis of the story and cinematic techniques to determine if the purpose of the original text was upheld, modified, or altered.
Third, you will, if needed, tell me WHY you think the director chose to uphold or deviate from the original text.
