Info for your Gallery Reports/Written Thoughts for Art–Let’s try these as a set of directions for a one page typed purposeful journaling-style report. The paper should reflect a progression of knowledge attainted though your life/this class/the book and possibly other art sources (like Dr. Moyer’s writings in The Monitor). Use as much of the vocabulary you are discovering as

is possible as it pertains to YOUR Subject/Art work/Aesthetic Experience OF CHOICE.

The following is a list of important considerations for your paper:

A) Identify: Factual Information-Begin with a general overview of the Show/Exhibition

1) Exhibit and Location

2) Featured Artist or Artists –Provide a general introduction or description of the entire show before moving into

specifics—For this part MOVE TO A GROUP-ONE OR TWO PIECES OR EVEN A SINGLE WORK THAT DESERVES through

written INTERPRETATION/ANALYSIS/EVALUATION/”ATTENTION”—because it speaks to you – it’s the BEST or the

WORST or the LOUDEST or the QUIETEST or the MOST BEAUTIFUL…

React to the strongest or weakest work as you did with the initial PB assignment—

INCLUDE A SELFIE OF YOU WITH THE “Featured” PIECE (or Pieces) FOR +5%

Zoom in and react to 1-2-3 pieces beginning with—

4) Date/Time Period

5) Medium or Media

B) Describe as you would to someone over the phone, giving them a visual picture

1) Subject Matter-What are you looking at?

2) Formally-Form/Formal Analysis—

h) Shape(s)

i) Amount of detail, surface magic, etc. whether the work is representational or not

j) Style – personal-group-cultural-time period…

C) Interpret–Content

1) What do you FEEL is the message/meaning/function of the work? (And of course why….for 1 & 2-)

2) How does your interpretation line up with the artist’s?

Read the Artist Statement. Or make use of any other contextual help via labels, etc.

D) Evaluate Subjective criticism

3) How do you personally respond to the artwork?

4) Like/Dislike WHY?!? Details! Specify the why!
