An introduction with a clear thesis
For each of the articles, a paragraph long summary
A parallel analysis detailing the differences and similarities (in term of ideas) between the two articles
Your reflection/analysis on the comparison
A conclusive paragraph summarizing the discussion
Again, these are NOT rigid requirements, but rather, basic elements of what a good comparative essay often includes. Use this template if it helps you think through the assignment. You need not to follow this template, if it works better for you to write in a more personalized style.
When writing, consider what one author would say to the other. Would they agree, disagree, or have something new to add? When comparing you are effectively putting two writers in dialogues, and in doing so, new ideas will emerge. Your comparison should have a clear sense of focus, whether that be argumentative (that you agree with one writer more than the other), revelatory (an idea from the past might have different or similar meaning now), or more. You will have a fair amount of freedom in choosing how you want to frame your discussion.
