What is the purpose of the assignment?
The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate your understanding of an issue/dimension of diversity that we have studied during this course related to race/ ethnicity, class/socioeconomic class (poverty), gender, gender spectrum, sexual orientation, exceptionality, or language. You will select one of these issues and narrow to a sub-topic/sub-group. You will examine the history of this issue legally, socially, institutionally, and within the context of U.S public schooling. Finally, you will consider applications of what it means to be educated about this topic as a future teacher: such as how you approach/think about teaching and learning, how you engage with students, families and the community, how you create/prioritize curriculum, etc. In essence, what does it mean to do the work of social justice as a future teacher in this arena knowing what you know now?
