Topic: King Leopold’s Ghost
Paper details:
In Adam Hochschild’s book, King Leopold’s Ghost, we read about colonial extraction in the Congo by Belgium from 1885 until 1960. Over that period, the Belgians were active in a number of industries. How did the character of the resource being exploited and the international industry around it – first ivory, then rubber– affect the character of the colonial enterprise and what Bernstein would call the “labor regime” in the Congo? How were the systems of economic exploitation and the social/cultural impacts similar and/or different? For this reading response, you do not have to compare 2 authors, only refer to and cite at least 2 different assignfkted chapters in the book.
