The Medieval Social Order
During the High Middle Ages (1000-1300), some intellectuals claimed that society consisted of three orders: Those who prayed (the clergy); those who fought (primarily noblemen who fought as mounted knights); and those who worked (the vast majority of society, whose labor provided the necessary resources for the other two orders). In order for society to function properly, it was believed that all three had to fulfill their specific roles for the benefit of all.
Based on your reading of both the primary and secondary sources on Canvas, write a two-to-three-page paper examining the relationship amongst the three orders. What did intellectuals at that time consider to be the ideal roles for each order, and did these orders actually fulfill those roles? Good papers will be clearly written and include quotations from and references to both primary and secondary sources.
