You are running for public office in 1860. Your assignment is to research the candidates who represented the Republican and Democratic Parties that year. Find out first of all, what issues these two candidates were dealing with in their campaign. Second, you are to pick a side on which you wish to take a stand. As such, you will write a two-page speech in which you deal with the issues of the day. Keep in mind that your objective is to win the election and as you present your speech, do so in such a way as to let your audience (me) know that you both understand what the major issues are and that you have a clear plan to deal with each of them. You are allowed to discuss the point of view of your opponent but be sure to do so in such a way as to convey respect and dignity. Remember the academic honesty policy. Also, you must produce a bibliography that includes three sources (one of them being a primary source).
In regard to the content you will be graded on the following:
Did you effectively tackle the issues of the day?
Were you thoughtful and engaging in presenting the issues of the day?
Did you look at the issues from both sides and present a clear answer to those issues?
Did you cite three sources in Chicago Style using at least one primary source?
Remember that all sources must be scholarly and authoritative.
Did you integrate primary source citation into your bibliography?
Did you properly format your speech?
