What is the danger of having laws that are vague or lacking in standards?

What constitutional provisions come into play regarding this issue, and what groups were the Supreme Court concerned about, in particular, when it addressed the issue of vagueness and the lack of standards? Why were they so concerned about these groups?

Do you believe the standards are clear to law enforcement officers and members of the public regarding the use of deadly force?

Could “vagueness” be an explanation for recent cases over the past few years of the use of deadly force on African American males, in particular?

(As you may have followed from the news, the House voted to reauthorize FISA on Tuesday of last week.  The bill goes to the Senate now for a vote. Do you believe that there are provisions in FISA that are vague as is being argued by some members of Congress?

If you are unfamiliar with FISA, don’t spend time researching this part of the question.  If you are, please share your opinion with me and your colleagues. If you have no idea what FISA is, as a criminal justice student, you should do a quick search of the subject so that you can be conversant about it.  This is a very important homeland security issue.)
