McRaven’s Advice on Living a Good Life and Making the World Better
This discussion assignment relates to Admiral McRaven’s Commencement Speech delivered at the University of Texas.
In his speech, McRaven gives ten pieces of advice based on lessons he learned during Navy SEAL training. His hope is that his advice will help us both lead more fulfilling lives and change the world for the better. If you would like to review the speech and/or transcript, here is a link:

Instructions:
Begin the assignment by reflecting on the speech. What do you think about McRaven’s advice? Though few of us have had Navy SEAL training, McRaven intends to offer us insights from which we can benefit, whether or not we have served in the military.
Did you find any part of the speech to be especially striking? What aspects of the speech made the strongest impression?
Part I: Now, having reflected, write a post in which you comment on the speech. Let’s call this post your “original post.” In your original post, address one or more of the following questions:
In your view, what are the most insightful points that McRaven makes? Why do you view these points as especially insightful?
Is there anything you would add to the remarks that McRaven makes in relation to these points?
Do you regard any parts of McRaven’s speech as puzzling, dubious, or false? If so, which parts do you find problematic, and why?
McRaven makes many comments related to the virtue of resilience. In your view, what are some key characteristics that resilient people tend to possess?
Suppose that you were to make integrity and resilience central goals within your own life (indeed, perhaps they are already central aims for you!). What would be the most significant steps you would take in developing such character traits?
Again, it is not necessary to address all of these questions. Simply address as many as you want, aiming for a commentary that is at least 250 words in length.
Be sure that at least half of each of your posts consists of views that belong to you and that you articulate in your own wording.
That is, refrain from simply summarizing the views of others or taking up most of the length of your post with a long quotation from an external source.
Your own views are very important, and we would love to hear them! Along these lines, please write using sentences that are clear and grammatically sound. Good writing will help us to fully appreciate your ideas, observations, and insights.
