Arguments about Education
Brainstorming on any of the following questions might help you come up with a topic:
• Should Ohio’s method of school funding be changed? If so, how?
• Should arts classes (including music, dance, etc.) be better funded and/or promoted?
• Does school stifle creativity? If so, how should it be changed to nurture creativity?
• Does our culture undervalue poor people while overvaluing rich people? Is this attitude a problem? How should we change our values in this regard?
• Do we overvalue consuming while undervaluing creation and friendship? How might we change our values?
• Should we look at happiness more realistically instead of telling ourselves that buying things brings happiness?
• Do we prioritize helping rich people earn more—which results in a relatively low overall increase in happiness—rather than helping poor people make a basic living, which significantly increases happiness?
• What policies in your high school or elementary school should be kept or changed?
• Do schools do students a disservice by ignoring non–cognitive skills? Should these be taught?
• Should more programs like “Ounce of Prevention” and Leadership training be offered at our schools?
• Is bullying of a specific group (or bullying in general) a problem at our schools? What can be done about it?
• Are college textbook prices unfair? If so, what can be done about the problem?
You are not limited to the topics listed above; these are just suggestions.
