Part 4 – Phylogeny

Provide two phylogenetic trees. Each should have 5-10 species and try to include one “outgroup.” MEGA is a pretty good and well-accepted output for trees.

Tree 1: Your protein homologs (the tree should display the species and the protein name or protein abbreviation such as “Homo sapiens BRCA1”).

Tree 2: Run a nucleotide phylogenetic tree on 18S ribosomal RNA from Taphrina deformans. The GI number is 349142. Find the appropriate DNA sequences from the organisms you used in Tree 1 (or close to it).

In 1-3 sentences, compare the two trees. Include a figure legend with each tree. Find examples of published phylogenetic trees for inspiration on how to write the figure legend.
