ICAO CERT Tool — New Practice in Place
Before beginning, be sure that you have read the readings and resources for this module.
You are the Environment Health & Safety Manager of Eagle Airlines. You have been tasked urgently by the top management of Eagle Airlines to give an estimate of the CO2 emissions for the year 2019. You have been given the weekly schedule of flights to provide an aggregated calculation of potential flights, given that the schedule remained the same for the whole year.
You will use the ICAO CO₂ Estimation and Reporting Tool (CERT) as an assessment of whether the operator is within the applicability scope of Annex 16, Volume IV, Part II, Chapter II requirements towards the submission emissions monitoring plan and the operator’s eligibility to use ICAO CORSIA CERT as a monitoring method in 2020. Assume, that each month has 4 weeks in a 12-month period.
Read the End User License Agreement for ICAO CO₂ Estimation and Reporting Tool (CERT), (Links to an external site.) and accept the agreement. Read the information in the “Background” tab. Then select ” agree” at the end of the page to download the file ICAO CORSIA CERT 2019 xlsm.
After you open the file, select ” accept” at the end of the first sheet. On the page that opens, choose the first option “Assessment of whether the operator is within applicability scope of Annex 16,” and select “next.”
Then start to fill in the required details, as they are given in the case study of Eagle Airlines (DOCX). Download Eagle Airlines (DOCX).
At the top management’s request, write an executive summary explaining how this scheme for emissions reduction is applied, and address the following points:
Based on your calculations, what is an estimate of CO2 emissions for 2019?
Did Eagle Airlines fall within CORSIA requirements?
Which aircraft and flights have been excluded from your calculations, and why?
Did the airline do anything that could be considered as successful Corporate Social Responsibility action?
Submit both the completed spreadsheet with your CORSIA calculations as well as the executive summary.
