Background to the Research
This section introduces the issue or the problem. What is the issue or problem? Put in another way, is there a problem? Is the problem worldwide? Is the problem in the UK? Which groups are affected by the problem? Is the problem affecting women or men? Is the problem affecting children or adults? Is the problem affecting people of a particular ethnic group? Is the problem affecting people of a particular religion? Is the problem affecting a particular region? What is the trend of the problem? Is it increasing or getting worse? Etc.
Statement of the Problem
This section provides the purpose for the research. This section specifies the problem to be researched and the purpose of the research. This is normally one paragraph.
Research Questions
The research questions provide the questions the student will investigate. The questions should emerge from the identified problem. For example, if the problem is high prevalence of smoking among young people in the UK, and if you want to find out the causes, the broad question could be, what are the causes of smoking among young people in the UK?
Literature Review
This section provides identification of major literature that supports and validates the topic; focuses on areas that offer support for new research, and offers the student an opportunity to analyse and synthesize past research in the context of their present problem.
Methodology
This section provides the approach to conduct the research and analyse the data. The methodology is summarized, serving as a general outline of the methods that will be employed.
Timeline
This provides an idea of time for completion of the research. This section provides the student structure for managing sections of the project within a realistic time frame.
