The film editor is responsible for putting the pieces together into a coherent whole.
They must guide our thoughts, associations, and emotional responses effectively from one image to another, or from one sound to another so that the interrelationships of separate images and sounds are clear and the transitions between scenes are smooth.

What is the effect of editorial cutting and transitions on the pace of the film as a whole?
How does the cutting speed (which determines the average duration of each shot) correspond to the emotional tone of the scene involved?
