2. Analyze theme in “The Parable of the Prodigal Son.”
3. Analyze voice or character in “A Rose for Miss Emily”
4. Analyze symbol in “Young Goodman Brown'” Consider the historical basis for this story.
We will analyze each of these stories in class. Be sure to read each one carefully and take notes on the subjects indicated. For example, what is irony (defined in the text and lecture) and how is it evident in “The Gift of the Magi?”
What is the theme (defined in the text and in lecture) of “The Parable of the Prodigal Son,” and how is it evident in this story?
What is the double meaning evident in this story? Analyze the author’s portrayal of Miss Emily.
Does she typify a southern person of this era? Finally, what are the symbols evident in “Young Goodman Brown?” How do these symbols relate to the Puritan history of New England?
