Discussion 7
Write two brief paragraphs answering the questions below.
QUESTION
Discuss the difference between pragmatic speech and syntax. Give an example of each. What role does common ground play in language?’
EXAMPLE
The book characterizes pragmatics as focusing “on the social rules and world knowledge that allow speakers to successfully communicate messages to other people.”
Pragmatics require that both parties be able to make assumptions about the conversation while still understanding each other.
There are three topics considered in research on pragmatics which are common ground, an understanding of directives, and framing.
Common ground occurs when conversationalists share background knowledge or experiences that are necessary for mutual understanding.
Directives are sentences in which one is asking for someone to do something.
Lastly, the concept known as framing is used to describe the basic structure of our beliefs and how that pushes for more comfortability in conversation.
On the other hand, syntax refers to the grammatical rules that govern how words make sentences.
Syntax becomes an issue when children begin learning more words and, in turn, begin speaking more frequently.
Typically arising specifically when children begin using two-word phrases in order to communicate.
Of course, with time, these two-word sentences slowly become full scentenes that most people can understand.
