“Wheat bread” often contains no whole grains at all. The brown color may come from the addition of molasses or other coloring agents which makes the product appear as though it is made with unrefined wheat.
If you look at the label the first ingredient is likely enriched wheat flour. Read through the rest of the ingredients list do you see anything that reads whole wheat flour or another whole grain ingredient?
“Whole Wheat Bread” may contain some whole wheat flour, but check the label on this one, too, because it may not contain much.
Where is whole wheat flour in the ingredient list? In this situation look for products that lists whole wheat as the first ingredient in the ingredient list.
This indicates that the ingredient in the product in highest concentration is the whole grain ingredient.
“Whole Grain Bread” may contain some whole grain flour, but is not limited to whole wheat. Other grains, such as oats, may be added, too.
Again, check the label, though to make sure this product is offering what the messaging on the package claims. Is a whole grain ingredient listed as the first ingredient? Just like with whole wheat bread, you want to choose grains products with a high concentration of whole grains.
“100% Whole Wheat/Whole Grain Bread” contains 100% of it’s grain ingredients in the form of whole grains. These breads are often the most naturally nutritious choice and offer the highest amount of fiber.
