Write a short response of 800-900 words (3-4 pages, 12 point font, double-space).
Imagine you are a traveller to Chicago in its early years, 1830-1870 (i.e. before the Great Fire). Write a letter home to relatives describing your experience in the city. While writing the letter consider these questions: How did you get to the city?
What is the purpose of your trip to Chicago? What is the physical layout of the city like? What sights, sounds, or smells catch your attention? What kinds of people live here? What jobs do people have? What do they do for fun? Who are you likely to meet? What surprises you about the city? Pay close attention to chronology.
What does Adam Mack mean by the term “civic health” and why does he use this term? How did a person’s socioeconomic class shape the way they experienced the Chicago River? (YOU CAN USE THIS AS THE THIRD COURSE MATERIAL. IT’S A DISCUSSION.)
No matter which option you must have at least four (4) references to 3 (three) different course materials. MLA-style parenthetical citations are fine.
MAKE SURE TO USE 3 DIFFERENT SOURCES, 2 BOOKS AND 1 DISCUSSION.
Example citations: Documents (Hoffman, 72); Books (Pacyga, Chicago, 23); Films (City of the Century); Lecture/Discussion notes: (McCormick, Lecture). A bibliography is not required. NO OUTSIDE SOURCES– WHETHER CITED OR IMPLIED
