READ CHAP. 4 & CHAP. 5. Consider, this question, about the chapters you’re reading:
Jews, Christians and Muslims all share a belief in God, yet their respective traditions in art differ greatly from one another. In Ch. 4, we encounter early Christian art and the art of Byzantium. Ch. 5 introduces some of the traditions of the art of the Islamic world.
What is the major difference between the art of these two traditions? What is the central reason for this difference?
-Do some online research about Islamic Art and Architecture. What did you find?
-Familiarize yourself with Dr. Peter Frankopan , Professor of Global History at Oxford University, who wrote The Silk Roads (2016) and The New Silk Roads (2018).
*Credible online sources may include Khan Academy, Met Museum, BBC, PBS, NPR, etc.
-Give the illustration number in your textbook of an Islamic work of art or architecture, or post an image or link to an image found online, and discuss-
-refer to the Intro to the textbook and do not forget to research materials (what are they, how are they made, how are they manipulated or worked with to craft the object), and techniques, as well as context and/or symbolism, etc.
