Come to the seminar prepared to discuss the privatisation of the major nationalised industries.
Can you explain the drivers for and the aims of privatisation as one aspect of the broader Conservative policy for ‘rolling back the frontiers’ of government through the 1980s and early 90s.
Now, focusing on one of the major privatised industries – the rail industry if you like, but another if you prefer – do some research and give some thought to the following questions & discussion points:
How was this industry privatised? (i.e. can you identify the relevant key statutory vehicle via which this transition was achieved?)
Can you identify the regulatory body that was set up to oversee the functioning of this privatised industry? What does it do? What powers does it have?
