As you know, this module was co-created with colleagues at Dove House Hospice in Hull. For this assignment, we would like you to find out more about hospices. We are asking you to write an essay considering what role hospices have in supporting people with dementia.
In preparation for this essay, here are some issues you might want to consider:
What is a hospice, and do the values and ethos of the hospice movement fit with the philosophies of dementia care?
What services do hospices typically offer that might support a person with dementia and their families?
Do hospices have the skills to support people with dementia? Are their services and settings suitable for people with dementia?
Do we need hospice support in dementia care? Are current care models sufficient and are they working for people with dementia?
Thinking about what you have learned about a palliative care approach, when might a hospice become involved in the care of a person with dementia or that of their families?
What evidence can you find about hospices providing support to people with dementia? Has this been successful? Are there concerns or barriers that prevent hospices providing care to people with dementia and their families?
