What is a healthy perspective for your own diet choices-how can we respect of the autonomy of others?

Protein supplements are extremely popular and athletes and fitness-minded consumers spend billions of dollars on them each year. Given that these products aren’t necessary with a healthy diet, why are athletes drawn to them?  Is it good or bad? Why?

Veganism and vegetarianism have grown in popularity and social acceptance over the last 50 years. Even still there can be an uneasy tension; this debate still sparks controversy for example when parents raise their children as strict vegans.  Another source of controversy comes from issues of animal mistreatment in modern agriculture practices.   Why is this sometimes such a controversial issue?  Why do people on both sides feel so passionate about their dietary choices?  What is a healthy perspective for your own diet choices and how can we respect of the autonomy of others?  Should people be allowed to choose?

Kwashiorkor is directly linked to a lack of protein in the diet even when calories from carbohydrates are available. Children are especially susceptible to this problem because of their growing and developing bodies.   If you worked for a global food charity what could you do to ensure that a balanced diet delivered to those in need, not just rice or other carbohydrate foods?  Why are protein foods harder to deliver by these charitable organizations (cost, storage, cooking, etc.)?
