SPA: COVID-19—Answer The Following Questions, also follow all of the directions in the EZ Outline/Template, Checklist, and Rubric to Guide Your Writing
There is a great deal of discussion about COVID-19 (which stands for COrona VIrus, Date, 2019). The President of the United States refuses to wear a mask, has large rallies in stadiums or other large venues where social distancing and mask-wearing are not only not required, they are discouraged.
The Lieutenant Governor of Texas, Dan Patrick has said that old people, your grandparents, great grandparents, etc. should be willing to die to save the American economy. (Links to an external site.)
(Links to an external site.)Furthermore, he has argued that he doesn’t need to listen to anything that Dr. Anthony Fauci has to say about COVID-19. (Links to an external site.) Dr. Fauci is the head epidemiologist for the United States, but he has been sidelined by the president and the White House staff.
1. What is the truth about COVID-19, as we know it when you are reading this?
a. Find two or three videos or articles about this pandemic and briefly summarize them (35 words or more with a separate word count for each video or article.)
b. Tell me what is true and why. (35 words or more with a separate word count)

“Science works! Believe the science, not the conspiracy theories! We have vaccines because they prevent the most serious of human diseases from devastating life on the only planet we have.
If you’re unsure about vaccines, check into the most common diseases to see what they do to the human body and look at the pictures! We have virtually eliminated many of the most deadly diseases from most of the planet including:
Diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (DTaP), Tetanus, diphtheria and acellular, pertussis (Tdap “booster” for adolescents), Poliovirus (IPV), Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), Varicella (Chickenpox), Pneumococcal (PCV), Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), Influenza (annual flu shot) (Links to an external site.), Rotavirus, Hepatitis B (Hep B), Hepatitis A (Hep A), Human papillomavirus (HPV), Meningococcal (MenACWY), Meningococcal B (MenB).
(https://www.healthpartners.com/blog/childhood-immunization-schedule-by-age/). (Links to an external site.) In fact, Smallpox, one of the most deadly diseases in the world, was eliminated worldwide in 1977 after more than 3,000 years and millions upon millions of agonizing and horrific deaths. (https://www.cdc.gov/smallpox/history/history.html (Links to an external site.)) (https://www.statista.com/statistics/1108306/smallpox-number-of-cases-worldwide-historical/ (Links to an external site.)).
All of these vaccines and now the new COVID-19 Vaccine can prevent the deaths of the most vulnerable among us: the old, the young, the immunocompromised, those with cancer and other difficult-to-treat diseases including a variety of auto-immune diseases.
You may think that you have a right to not vaccinate your children or yourself, but when you refuse vaccinations that can prevent deadly disease, the dispersal of deadly disease, and the severity of deadly disease you are saying that your personal “rights” to be unvaccinated have more value and are more important than the rights of others who cannot be vaccinated to live free of deadly diseases and free of death from those diseases.
When you turn your back on science you are turning your back on the long-fought-for-human-rights to be free of deadly diseases and pandemics. Don’t believe Fox, OAN, NewsMax, QAnon, Proud Boys, the Three-Percenters, or any other right-leaning outlets or groups that are telling you not to trust the science and not to trust the main-stream media.
From July 9-11, 2021, CPAC which is a large group of extremely conservative Republicans and various right-wing fringe organizations, met in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma where loud and sustained applause was offered by the audience when told that the Biden administration’s goal of 70% COVID-19 vaccination by July 4, 2021, was not met! They were applauding for death! They would rather their family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and community members die than that the virus be defeated by a simple and scientifically proven shot in the arm.

As of this writing (July 19, 2021), the number of COVID-19 victims worldwide and in the states of the US that voted for the former president, is increasing and almost all of the people in the US who are being hospitalized with COVID-19 and who are dying from COVID-19 are people who have not been vaccinated.
According to the Associated Press, “Nearly all COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. now are in people who weren’t vaccinated, a staggering demonstration of how effective the shots have been and an indication that deaths per day — now down to under 300 — could be practically zero if everyone eligible got the vaccine” (https://apnews.com/article/coronavirus-pandemic-health-941fcf43d9731c76c16e7354f5d5e187 (Links to an external site.)).
If you don’t believe in science, suggest that you walk everywhere you need to go, that you never fly, that you never use electricity or natural gas or nuclear power, that you give up your cell phones, your computers, everything that is electronic, that you never read a book, don’t wear eyeglasses or hearing aids, don’t wear clothing from any kind of manufactured fabrics. recommend that you live in a cave, make your own weapons, kill and prepare your own food using flint tools, make your own dwellings.
Use wild plants and animals for food and clothing, drink and bathe only in freshwater rivers and streams, in other words, live the way humans lived for most of our existence when the average life-span was 25-35 years and the child and infant mortality rate, as well as the maternal mortality rate, was exponentially higher than it is today.
All of the technological innovations of today’s world came about because of science! So if you don’t believe in science, stop using it! Just stop! Live on your own terms without any science at all just to see how long you would survive, that means no guns, no modern knives, nothing that requires any kind of mass manufacturing.
By the way, making fire and knapping flint were both scientific/technological breakthroughs many thousands of years ago. If you refuse to live that way, then get the COVID-19 vaccine and protect yourself, your loved ones, and strangers who you might kill if you have symptomatic or asymptomatic COVID-19. Thank you!”
3. Do you believe the former president and his cohorts, or do you believe in science?
a. Explain your answer (35 words or more with a separate word count).
