A self-help book is a “how to” book (even if it doesn’t have that in the title). For instance, book topics on how to overcome procrastination, how to mend a broken heart (there’s actually a book with this title), how to navigate through depression without medication, how to leave a toxic relationship, how to thrive as an introvert, how to gain control over toxic anger, and how to manage the grief of losing a loved one.
Remember, a self help book is written as a guide for the reader, with information, recommendations, and exercises for better understanding and addressing the issue with which you are struggling.
Autobiographies and fiction AREN’T self help books.
You need to select a book that is central to something YOU are personally struggling with, wanting to understand better about yourself, and improve upon. Think of it as a therapist in a book.
Amazon is a great place to find an inexpensive book with a title/topic that is personally relevant to you. You can start with a google search such as “self help books on overcoming social anxiety.” See what comes up, and then search for one of more of those titles on amazon.
The Project Sections:
Reaction: a 2-page reaction to the book. Why did you choose that book? What did you find most helpful? What did you find least helpful? What strategies have you tried (or are likely to try) that were suggested by the author?
Research: a 2-page research paper on some aspect of the book you read. If your book is on overcoming social anxiety, your research portion should focus on social anxiety. If your book is on relationship improvement, then your research should focus on sharing what the experts say about cultivating a healthy and satisfying relationship.
