You are working as an Enrolled Nurse on a medical ward. The Registered Nurse has requested you to assist her with the admission of Mrs Oki Durie. Mrs Durie is a 78 years old Maori woman, who has become unwell overnight. She had been admitted for further assessment and investigations.
Mrs Durie is accompanied by two of her whanau.
1. Identify the FIVE Principles of Te Tiriti O Waitangi and under each principle give an example of how you incorporate these into the on-going care of Mrs Durie and her whanau.
2. Tikanga Best Practice guidelines (BPG) have been developed to assist healthcare professionals to practice in a culturally safe manner with Tangata Whenua, in all health care settings.
You are the Enrolled Nurse working with the multidisciplinary team to provide holistic care for Mrs Durie. Overnight, Mrs Durie’s health status changed, she rapidly deteriorated and passed away.
Referring to the Tikanga Best Practice guidelines, discuss how you would assist the whanau members and provide culturally safe care for everyone involved in the passing of Mrs Durie.
